SOMATIC EXPERIENCING was developed by trauma therapist Peter Levine in the 1970's as a body-centered approach to trauma resolution. "Soma" meaning body-oriented and "experiencing" as a verb can be understood as 'experiencing the body at that particular moment.' SE practitioners (SEP) come from several different fields such as psychotherapy, coaching, nursing, EMTs, clergy, and massage therapists to name just a few of the helping professionals. Peter Levine teaches that trauma occurs not in the event itself but in our nervous system's response to the event.
SEP's understand that trauma is not only a psychological but a biological response such as in nervous system and connective tissue, specifically the fascia. The pace of SE is determined by the clients comfort level and it seeks to repair and complete the natural response to re-regulate a dysregulated nervous system, in return building resilience and greater awareness.
The therapeutic process will involve facilitating states of arousal triggered by the trauma and sensations of safety. The process of going back and forth between these states is called pendulation and it focuses on recognizing these sensations. Trauma can interfere with our ability to recognize our internal state and this technique helps us reconnect with ourselves and what's going on in our bodies. You will learn to safely ride these somatic experiences as you heal.
SOMATIC PARTS--Integrating mind and body
Somatic parts work integrates the methodology of Internal Family Systems Therapy(IFS) and other trauma informed models. IFS Therapy was grounded in the idea that our inner world consists of parts or subpersonalities and together these parts form our inner system. Our various parts conflict with each other and act in dysfunctional ways in an attempt to protect us from pain caused by life experiences and can show up as tension in your body as well as limiting beliefs, thinking and behaviors. Somatic Parts work helps us relate with openness, curiosity and compassion to ourselves. Through this process we allow each part to reveal itself and the pain it is protecting us from. Transform "stuck parts" of yourself into inner resources of strength, love and freedom. Remove barriers in your relationships and gain a deeper understanding of yourself and behaviors.
